For both types of test, you will receive your results within 2-3 days of your sample reaching the lab.

When to test

You may choose to do this test as a general health check, to make sure you don’t have chlamydia or gonorrhoea. Some people choose to take the test when they meet a new partner.

If you are testing because you have recently had unprotected sex and are worried you might have caught chlamydia or gonorrhoea, you should wait at least 2 weeks after the incident before testing. The infections take some time to show up and are unlikely to be detected if you take the test within 2 weeks of the incident.

How the test works

The test is a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test which can detect a short sequence of DNA or RNA from samples containing only tiny quantities of DNA or RNA. The PCR method makes the test more effective at detecting the presence of an infection.

Once you’ve taken the sample, you send it back to our laboratory in a pre-paid envelope that we include in with the kit. (This doesn’t cost anything extra). We will contact you within 2-3 days of your sample reaching the lab with your results.

The test will pick up genital chlamydia and genital gonorrhoea, but it won’t identify either infection in your anus or your throat. A swab test option is available for detection of Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea in the throat.

It is best to wait until two weeks after you think you might have been exposed to either infection to do the test.

If you do the test before two weeks have passed, it will probably be too soon for the test to pick up any sign of infection. The test doesn’t check for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We do sell an extended STI test kit though, so you might want to consider that option.
